Meet Andrea Gomes, RMT
In 2005 I decided that I needed a change in career, that a job as a travel agent sitting at a desk all day just wasn’t the right path for me. Since massage therapy has been a part of my own personal health plan since my early 20′s, I knew it would allow me to help others achieve their own wellness goals and was excited to work in a field that promotes health and can assist in making the stress of the world more manageable.
I graduated from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy, which is often described as the premier college for massage therapy training in North America. My education consisted of 3000 hours of academic and practical training. The hands-on program included working with patients with Multiple Sclerosis, HIV/AIDS and Fibromyalgia, clinical rotations at the BC Women’s Hospital with women having high-risk pregnancies, and a very strong emphasis on muskuloskeletal assessment and treatment of injuries. As a student I learned advanced treatment modalities such as CranioSacral therapy, Myofascial Release, Muscle Energy Technique and Dr.Vodder’s Manual Lymph Drainage. Since moving back to Ottawa in 2008 I have also taken workshops to learn Hot Stone Therapy.
Recently I have focused my practice on orthopedic and postural dysfunction as well as pre- and post-natal treatments. I use a variety of therapeutic modalities including swedish massage, hydrotherapy, myo-fascial release, muscle energy technique, myo-fascial trigger point release and manual lymph drainage. I believe massage therapy is an essential part of any health and wellness plan to help overcome pain, injury and illness and for stress management. I will encourage you to take an active role in your therapy through the use of home-care exercises and stretches.
Besides the work I do as a massage therapist I am also a trained Birth Doula and I am passionate about working with women in their birthing year. I am a mother of two beautiful children who inspire and challenge me daily and love to spend time with them and my husband camping, hiking and doing anything that gets me out into the natural world. I recently moved to Kanata and I am excited to work with The Wellness Group and become a part of this amazing community.
