Meet Sara Grace Petrunewich, Registered Massage Therapist

I have always known that I wanted to help people and be involved in healthcare in some capacity but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to do it. Having many severe food allergies since infancy, I grew up being very conscious of my health and what I put into my body. At home, my parents encouraged a healthy lifestyle by stocking the kitchen with fresh food and by emphasizing participation in activities I enjoyed. I also enjoyed many sports and was involved in competing and coaching figure skating until high school.

Sara Grace Petrunewich, Registered Massage TherapistMy post-secondary education started at Kemptville College. In 2005, I graduated with distinction with an Associate Diploma in Food Nutrition and Risk Management. This gave me a better understanding of the foodservice industry but left me wanting more direct involvement with patients on a more holistic level. This led me to massage therapy.

I received my education from the International Academy of Massage located in Ottawa. The program consisted of 2336 hours of academic and practical training. Our education also included many off-site events throughout the community. I graduated with honours in June 2009 and was presented the award for Excellence in Clinical Technique. As part of registration, I also hold memberships with both the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and the Ontario Massage Therapist Association.

Massage Therapy was once thought of strictly as a relaxation modality. It is quickly and widely becoming known for much more as people are being made aware of many other health benefits and conditions with which massage can provide complementary therapy to. As a student I learned about many common conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis which was being treated with surgery but in many instances can be treated less invasively and very successfully with massage therapy. Other conditions which massage therapy can help include but are not limited to: headaches, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and bursitis, sciatica, whiplash, gastrointestinal disorders, strains and sprains, muscle tension, fractures and edema.

As a new graduate, I am very excited to be joining a team with other health professionals with whom I can collaborate to ensure each client achieves the optimal level of wellness that they wish to attain. I understand that everything in our bodies is connected and that if we change one aspect of our life, it will most certainly impact another. I look forward to being part of your healthcare team and to help you achieve your personal health and wellness goals.
